Study rooms - terms and conditions of use

 

We provide our PhD postgraduate students with study rooms, carrels and locakable cupboards in the Arts building and Social Sciences building.

Study rooms are 1.54a, 1.54b, 1.29 and 1.30 on the first floor (west wing) of the Arts building, and rooms 1.53 and 1.55 at the Social Sciences building.

Arts Building study rooms contain study carrels with lockable cupboards, telephones (for internal calls only), power and network points. Social Sciences study rooms contain desk with hutches, shelves, telephones (for internal calls only(, power and network points.

These Arts rooms are  accessible only by a digital keypad. Students entitled to use these rooms will be issued with the keypad code.

Students will also be issued a key to use one of the lockable cupboards located in these rooms. This will be on a first-come first-served basis until further notice.

Room G.29A on the ground floor of the Arts Building has been assigned to postgraduates as a small meeting / coffee room. It is expected that postgraduates who use room G.29A will keep the room clean and tidy at all times.

Terms and conditions

Terms and conditions for use of the study rooms, carrels and lockable cupboard facility:

Room access

  • Only students who have been granted authorisation to use the Faculty of Arts Postgraduate Study Rooms are entitled to enter the rooms.
  • Students are not permitted to allow unauthorised visitors into the rooms.
  • It is intended that the rooms be used solely for the purpose of study, with exception of room G.29A which is a meeting / coffee room (described above). Any student who abuses the use of the rooms may have their right to use the rooms withdrawn or suspended.

Lockable cupboards

  • Students will be provided with a carrel and lockable cupboard in which to secure their possessions. This applies to rooms 1.54a, 1.54b, 1.29 and 1.30 (Arts Building) only. Each student will be provided with a key to his or her cupboard.
  • Students will be required to pay a deposit of $25 to obtain the key to the lockable cupboard. The key must be returned by the agreed return date, otherwise the student's deposit will be forfeited.

Theft and damage

  • Neither the Faculty, nor the University of Western Australia, is in any way responsible for any theft of or damage that occurs to students' possessions when they are left in either the rooms or the lockable cupboards.
  • Personal laptops can be secured to the carrel through the hole at the back. Students are required to supply their own lead and padlock.
  • The students acknowledge that all possessions left in the rooms or the lockable cupboards are left there entirely at the risk of the student.
  • Any suspicious behaviour in the rooms should be reported to the Executive Assistant to the Dean, Dean's Office on extension 3871.

Term

  • Postgraduate students are provided with the carrels and lockable cupboards for use during the calendar year in which application is approved. Hire of a carrel must be renewed at the end of the calendar year if ongoing hire of the carrel is desired for the following year.
  • The term of ongoing hire is for a maximum of 3 years, at which point priority will be given to applicants on the waiting list and new applicants respectively. If carrels are available after this allocation they will be assigned for ongoing hire on a first come first serve basis.
  • All postgraduate students are required to vacate the carrels, clean out their lockable cupboard and return their key to the administrative secretary, Deans Office (Rm G.43, extension 8754) by the expected return date.
  • On receipt of the key by the due date, the deposit will be returned to the student.

A $25 deposit will be required for a key to the carrel to be issued.
