If your disk quota is full, do not delete any files that you still need, and do not delete any files in the Library folder.
Files you remove are not really deleted until you empty the Trash. Only then is the space used by those files available again.
Instructions for reviewing your files and folders
Your disk quota applies to all files and folders owned by you on the server. Most of of that data will probably be in your home directory, but the real culprit may be somewhere else.
We can track down all your files for you, but a good starting point is to check the size of your home directory. If your home folder is almost over its quota, then the cause of the problem lies there.
- Begin by making sure the Trash is empty. Select 'Empty Trash' from the menu displayed when you click on the wastepaper basket in your dock.
- You can discover the size of any file, or folder by selecting it in the Finder and then choosing File -> Get Info from the menu at the top of the screen. It may take some time to calculate the size of a large folder, but eventually it will be shown.
- To measure several files at a time, open a new window to display your files and folders. There are three buttons in the top panel that change the view; click the button with parallel lines to switch to list view. Your files are displayed showing Name, Date Modified, and so on. If you click on any of these labels, the files are sorted in that order. Click on the word 'Size' to sort the list of files by size, and click again to toggle between ascending and descending order.
- Folder sizes are not usually shown in this view because it makes the Finder very sluggish. You can change this behaviour from the Finder menu (View -> Show View Options...), which presents you with a row of check boxes. Click 'This window only' and 'Calculate all sizes'. Once the folder sizes are calculated, the biggest folder will go to the top of the list.
- By looking through the biggest folders for the biggest files, you may be able to find some which you do not need. Check your Desktop and Documents folders, but any files in Movies, Music and Pictures are likely to be using a lot of space. Do not delete any files that you would prefer to keep, and do not delete any files in the Library folder.
