Career Resources for Current Students
|
The transition from university to the workforce can be quite a
daunting process, and often something for which students are not
fully prepared. These pages are designed to offer students
assistance in identifying the transferable skills an Arts degree
provides them with that employers are looking for, as well as the
means of enhancing their employability while still at
university.
What are my skills?
Many students find it difficult to know what exactly are the
skills they gained through their Arts studies, or how best to
describe them to future employers. The Arts Skills Summary is an
online exercise which helps students to pinpoint examples of
where in their studies they have attained certain skills, and
gives guidance on how to describe those skills when addressing
selection criteria in a job application.

How can I prepare for work after
University?
The Career Readiness Checklist is a
list of resources, services and self-guided tasks all aimed at
guiding students through the process of preparing for a career
after university.
Career/Employability: Some important
terms
| Generic skills |
Skills which are possessed or
learnt which help to achieve success in both studies and
career. These include problem-solving, effective
communication, critical thinking and effective
participation in team work. Typically, these are the
"transferable" skills you are expected to take from your
time at university into the workplace. |
| Transferable skills |
Skills which are learnt or
developed in one situation, and then used or applied in a
new situation. |
| Employability
skills |
Skills that are identified by
employers as good or desirable skills for all employees to
have and which are usually of great importance in the
workplace. These are often also called generic, or
transferable skills. |
| Selection Criteria |
A list of essential and desirable
skills, attributes, experience or educational
qualifications that have been identified by an organisation
as being necessary for a position. |
