The Diploma in Modern Languages

Learning a second language is a rewarding learning experience that has many academic and personal benefits.

The Diploma in Modern Languages is for UWA undergraduate students wishing to study a language major alongside their current Bachelor degree. By enrolling in a diploma, students typically extend the overall time it takes to complete their studies by 1 year, which frees up space to concentrate on other things in their Bachelor degree.

Diploma in Modern Languages students may apply to study some units of their course overseas. A Study Abroad or Student Exchange experience gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in their chosen language, obtain first-hand experience of another culture and way of life, and meet new people and form friendships.

Language choices

Languages available in this diploma are:

Asian Languages

European Languages

Language studies are available at beginners, intermediate (post-secondary), and advanced levels.

Students starting this diploma from 2012 onward will follow language major rules as defined in the New Courses Bachelor of Arts (BP001) second-major sequences.

Students already enrolled in this diploma pre-2012 will have a defined course pathway that was set at the time of admission. Requests to change course pathways can be made via special approval with recommendation from the relevant Language Coordinator or Convenor.
