Useful links

This graduate certificate enables students to gain a basic understanding of communications theory and equip them with some of the practical skills and knowledge needed in communications-related employment areas.

Skills and knowledge in communication studies are complementary to qualifications in a range of professional and other areas.

Students look at the nature of communication from a number of different perspectives and apply their knowledge in project-based work, while developing practical communication skills in the Arts Multimedia Centre. You will receive hands on experience in digital media, including website design, digital video and image manipulation.

The graduate certificate is intended for people who already hold a degree but who wish to undertake further study so that they can proceed to a graduate diploma and possibly also a master's degree, or who wish to obtain advanced qualifications in a specific area of expertise.

Course outline

This is a one semester full-time course in which you will study four communications studies units. Three units are required:

The fourth unit is an option unit. You can choose from:

As the core units are only taught in semester one, full-time students must commence in February. Part-time students may start in either February or July.

Graduates may be able to apply credit from this course towards further study at graduate diploma or master's level.

Career prospects

Graduates in communication studies will have an extra insight into the role of communication in every aspect of our lives, which will make them particularly valuable in areas such as journalism, the media, advertising, public relations, multimedia, public administration, business, government and education.

Completing further study beyond a bachelor's degree will enhance your chances of employment as well as advancement, as you will increase your knowledge in specific areas that interest you.
